Sans serif typefaces are more modern than serif typefaces. They lack the strokes that make them look different to serif typeface, hence the use of the French word “sans”.

Sans serif is usually used for signs, text in apps and names on maps.

Reasons why companies might use serif font could be to connote the idea that their company is experienced and are a reliable company.

Slab serif is a serif font where the serif is squared off, this gives the font a blocky and sturdy appearance.

Slab serif font is usually used when a front display is required, such as book covers, posters, advertisements and logotypes.

Primary and Secondary Research Definitions

The difference between Primary and Secondary research, the advantages and disadvantages of both. What would you research in order to make an effective media product?

Secondary research involves the summary of data that is already collected and published by other people. Primary research is a collection of original data that is specific to the research project, it aims to produce new knowledge which will often be more up to date.

Secondary research is easily accessible but it may lack the specificity or originality you may look for in your research. Whereas in primary research you can often get more specific and new data, but this will require more effort and more resources.

Primary Research: method of gathering relevant information

There are many ways to collect relevant primary research data some of which are:
Surveys ( this could be in person and online) a way to collect data from a large audience, interviews, focus groups which involves a guided discussion between a small group of participants this allows the researcher to explore collective views, observational research which involves a systematically watching and recording of interactional in the most natural context and etc.

Difference between quantitative and qualitative research

Quantitative research used objectives, numerical data to answer questions. These are usually "what" and "how often" questions. However, qualitative research usually answers questions like "why" and "how", focusing on subjective experiences to understand motivation and reason.

Secondary research: methods of gathering

This is a research method that uses data that was collected by someone else. in other words, when conducting research from data that already exits, you are conducting secondary research. The most common type of secondary research is statistical analysis, literature reviews, case studies and etc.

What is a tagline in terms of research and what is the difference between slogan and tagline?

A tagline in research is a catchy phrase or short sentence that summarises something. Taglines are more permanent representations, whereas slogans can be changed frequently and are often particular to specific.

Ryszard Kaja

Ryszard Kaja is a well-known Polish painter, graphic designer, stage and poster designer. He is mostly known for his distinctive posters. In his work he incorporates traditional aspects as well as his unique personal style, this makes his posters more recognisable.

What makes his work stand out is that it gives a strong hand painted aesthetic and he also focuses on strong messages, his work is simple but has multiple meanings. He avoids complicated designs and prefers simplicity and the message is directly spoken to the viewer.

As Kaja has experience with set design he had a fondness for creating posters for opera and theatre. When creating posters he often captured the emotional part of the performances that was advertised. When making posters for events such as festivals and exhibitions, it was usually vibrant.

Reason for choosing Łódź poster:

The poster I choose to recreate is one of Kaja`s most minimalist but also most symbolic one. This poster was made as tribute to a city in Poland. It is a perfect example of how Kaja blends modern geometric abstraction with Polish identity.

The reason I choose the image on the right to recreate is that minimalist design makes it visually appealing. Its simplicity allows easy interpretation. Also the use of primary colours and thick black lines give a contrasting effect.

This is what I ended up recreating, this was a practice but some things I would like to improve on next time is to also focus on the texture of the lines and change the tool to have more of a brush stroke texture to it. By doing this I will create more depth into the creation instead of it looking flat with no dimension.

Michal Batory ( first time using photoshop)

Michal Batory is a master of illusion, he is a French graphic designer. He makes unusual posters, the posters usually containing multiple images that blend together to create an abnormal poster which makes it eye-catching to the audience.

I like how Batory uses different type of objects to create an illusion of a different one. I think this is very unique and it probably is very eye catching to his audience. he also seems to be following a simple style in his posters. what I mean by this is, he uses a solid colour for all his poster backgrounds and creates a unusual yet a unique illusion in all is posters. This creates a ident to Batory's work style.

For my experiment of creating my own poster I used Adobe Photoshop and took inspiration from one of Batory's posters to create my own a similar poster.

This is the poster I was inspired by to create my own similar one:

Kahl, J. (2015, December 7). Presenting Shakespeare - slanted. Slanted. https://www.slanted.de/story/presenting-shakespeare/

As I was taking inspiration from Batory's work I wanted to use a simple solid background that compliments by subject as well as make is stand out. So I first added in my preferred background and made sure I had the layer locked. I then created another layer so that I could add in the picture of the scull, as I wanted to remove the background I selected the image and clicked on "remove background" which removed it automatically. I then placed the image in the position I wanted it to be and also locked it into place. To add the flowers into the image I followed the same instructions I had to use to get rid of the scull's background. I did this for each flower until I was satisfied with how the main image looked.

I wanted the writting on the poster to have a slight tilt to them as seen in Batory's poster. To achieve this look I had to create individual layers for each word.

This is the poster I created in the end of this session:

This poster is a Olivia Rodrigo music concert poster, that contain the dates of her tour around the world. It is for 'The Sour Tour' that was in 2022. I would say that her use of colours help her target her younger audience. The purple could suggest a more 'girly' and 'fun' concert experience to the audience. The use of layering images conveys a retro aesthetic to the poster also creating a inviting feel to the audience. The use of San Serif font gives the look of clean and edgy look to the poster. Then also it is less formal and aims at a younger audience.

Font Type for Posters

A poster is a large printed sheet that usually is helping to promote something. The common trait in posters could be the appealing layout and most posters convey information to its targeted audience. Depending on what type of posters the font type will change.

Some examples of different types of posters can be educational, political, social, advertising, fashion, movie, music, concert and etc. In these different posters different type of font will be used. Different fonts can bring different emotion, create emphasis and target specific audiences.

Using the right font can influence how people perceive the message you are trying to convey. Different poster genres use different fonts and the font chosen varies depending on the genre and intended audience. The fonts used in posters are selected to match the mood and the message that the poster is trying to convey.

Designer Research

The designer that I have chosen to inspire my own design is La Boca. LaBoca work is usually quite bold and colourful, they are not afraid in creating new designs. This makes their images more memorable and they grab your attention by using unique shapes. Their images usually ‘keep one foot in the past’ and ‘keep one foot in the future’ using both familiar and completely new images.

Shop, L. B. P. (n.d.). One flew over the cuckoo’s nest. La Boca Print Shop.https://www.labocashop.co.uk/product/one-flew-over-the-cuckoo-s-nest

In this design the shape of a flying bird has been used at the the side profile of a person. This design intrigues the audience as this design is not something you would usually see its unique at eye caching to the audience. The use of colours are fairly simple and nothing is new or shocking about the colour choice.

From this design I like the creative idea of the side profile on a silhouette of the fling bird. I think it is a great way to grab the audiences attention. They have done this by using different/unique designs.

Poster Draft

This is the rough idea of how I want my poster to look. I'd like to use san serif font in my concert poster as this will give a more modern and clean look to the poster and will help target the right audience.

Lighting Styles - Yasmin

Three Point Lighting is a standard method that is used in visual media such as theatre, film, still photography. It involves using three light sources placed in three different positions they are the key light, the fill light and the backlight.

-The key light is used is the main light that is used to see your subject. It often is the brightest and shows the most of the subject's face.
- The fill light is designed to fill in the shadow made by the key light and to fill out the face.
It's usually placed on the other side of the face and it's not as bright as the key light.
- The backlight is any light coming from behind the subject. Backlights can come in many different styles but anything that hits the subject can be considered the backlight.

High-key lighting is when the subject is filled fully with light at almost the same level as the key light. It results in a brightly lit subject with more full light and soft shadows. The fill light is then used to increase the amount of ambient light in the shot. High-key lighting creates a bright and cheerful atmosphere and its usually used in genres like comedies, commercials and etc.

Low-key lighting is the opposite of high-key lighting. This type of lighting typically uses just one type of key light and some type of fill light may or may not be used. Without the fill light the lighting may not be balanced and balancing the fill light creates a deeper and darker shadow. Low-key lighting is often used in horror films and crime dramas as it creates a dark and suspenseful mood to the shot.

Hard lighting
is usually a powerful light that helps highlight a particular area of the shot and creates large shadows. The contrast between the light and the shadow is well-defined and harsh. This type of lighting helps the silhouette of the subjects to stand out clearly. Hard lighting creates a strong sense of drama and gives the photo an edgy and gritty look.

Rembrandt lighting
is a standard lighting technique that's used in studio portraits and cinematography. This type of lighting is used using one light and a reflector or two lights and it is popular because it is capable of producing images that appear both natural and compelling. This lighting creates a dramatic mood and by adjusting the reflector you can develop a triangle patch under the eye which helps create an indelible mood.

Camera Basics

DSLR: It is a digital camera that combines the optics and mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with solid image sensor and digital records the image from the sensor.

Aperture: It is the opening through which light passes into the camera. The wider the opening, the more light can reach the camera sensor, which affects the exposure of the image.

Shutter speed: The speed at which the shutter of the camera closes. A faster shutter speed creates a shorter exposure, the amount of light the camera takes in while a slow shutter speed gives the photographer a longer exposure.

Depth field: It is how much of the image is in focus. It is the distance in an image where objects appear in focus or have a level of sharpness.

Exposure: The amount of light that reaches the camera sensor or film. This determines how much light gets into the picture.

ISO: The sensitivity of the camera to the light. A higher number indicates a higher sensitivity and greater ability to capture light.

Practical Making a Poster

In the previous lesson, I made a few sketches of posters I could initially use.

From the sketches I made I have made a sample poster for my music concert.

I might change the colour theme for the photographic photos, I would keep the font the same I feel as if it goes well with the genre.

6 Types of Advertising Media Channels

Advertising media is where businesses can promote their products, services or brand through a variety of mass media or other alternative media channels
Each type of advertising media communicates marketing messages to their potential customers through different mediums such as, over the television, radio or social media.

Using the right type of advertising, marketers can approach different audiences in distinct ways. Each medium of advertising can be chosen based on the goal of the business (this could be whether brand awareness or direct sales) and or the channels ability to reach their intended target audience.

The following types of advertising methods have its own det of advantages and disadvantages that businesses/companies may consider when choosing them.

1. Video Advertising: Television and YouTube

From the first ever legal television advertisement from 1942, television advertisement is one of the most popular media channels for marketer. As well as the popularity for video ads have expanded beyond the traditional cable box to platforms such as YouTube ads and online videos. This enables them to showcase their commercials across various websites to connect with a wide online audience.

Pros:
As this type of advertisement is both audio and visual is allows the audience to have a multi sensory experiences that allows the audience to feel the how valuable the product may be. As the commercial is most likely to be played on someone's television, the first view takes place at the audience's home, which makes it much more personal to the audience. It allows the brand to reinforce its brand message.

Cons:
The viewers of television adverts do not actively listen to the commercial, they often try to skip or avoid them when they get the opportunity. Also not everyone that is viewing the commercial would be the target audience, this could be wasteful of the amount you are using to advertise.

2. Audio Channels: Radio & Podcast Advertising

This way of advertisement was developed during the 19th century, even today traditional radio remains very popular for listeners and advertisers.

Pros:
Radios are very accessible, as most cars and homes have radios. Also this method is a very cost effective medium, compared to television counterpart.

Cons:
Viewer are usually preoccupied while listening to the radio, so it might be difficult to get the full attention of the listener.

3. Newspaper

Print medium like newspapers are usually the more old type of media channels for advertisements.

Pros:
It is a great way to target the audience that read newspapers, and it can be trusted to spread the advertisement to that specific audience ( the older demographic ).

Cons:
You will not be able to target the younger audience, so using the newspaper as a method of advertisement you will not be able to reach a wide audience.

4. Print & Digital Publication (Magazines)

From the 1600s to the 20th century, magazines are known for its distinct audience and a way to purchase ads that are in colour.

Pros:

It is highly targeted, it allows the marketers to target their audience in a much easier way. As each audience would purchase this product and as magazines have a long self life, the reader would not immediately throw it away.

Cons:

As magazines are made ready in a week or months advance of when it is published, it is difficult to put out timely ads. So the adverts might not come out the certain time period the product is most popular, leading to less purchase.

5. Out-Of-Home Advertising

Graphic Poster Final Piece

I first found this image on the internet and by using Photoshop I added an illustrated effect to the image. Then I found a image of a star on the internet and I made a new layer and named it "Star". I then cut out the background and multiplied the stars and placed it in the position I wanted them to be. Then for each of the texts I made new layers and changed the colour of the text to my preference.

Photographic Poster Final Piece

The image above his my final photographic poster. I used canva to create this poster. I made sure to use a font that would help me target the audience I want to target. I also made sure the colour of the font wouldn't blend in with the background but would also look "soft and gentle".
